May 24th - 29th 2010: Carnival Week in Aalborg
Theme: Mars and Venus

In the week of May 24th- 29th 2010, the city gates of Aalborg, Denmark, open up for the celebration of the traditional carnival. The streets will be filled with all sorts of people dressed up in both imaginable and unimaginable costumes. The Carnival in Aalborg is the largest carnival in Northern Europe in terms of number of active participants. In fact, the participants amount to more than 25.000. It is the celebration of the people – a vivid celebration of life.

The carnival in Aalborg exceeds limits and boundaries in more than one way, and over the years the carnival has managed to put Aalborg on the great international carnival map. The Carnival in Aalborg is listed on The Miami Herald’s world list of carnivals, among the great carnivals of the Caribbean and South America. The carnival in Aalborg has also been selected one of top 50 attractions in Europe by www.localfestivities.com. In this way, the stout-hearted Danes find themselves celebrating he coming of Spring side by side with fellow carnival enthusiats from near and far; Fur-clad Bulgarians representing century-old carnival traditions; sweating and hip-wriggling Brazilian dancers; impressivly tall and colorful Caribbean mass bands and mask groups from Southern Europe - these are just some of the elemts included in the carnival in Aalborg. These international carnival groups from all over the world are carefully selected and invited to display the different carnival traditions that are unique to their individual country, and thereby enhancing the cultural diversity of this special event.

Children's Carnival
Sunday, on May 24th, the streets of Aalborg are turned into a magic kingdom of fun, color and children in all kinds of costumes. The children and their parents have their own parade and party to celebrate carnival - and all in favor of the children. Painted faces, princesses, pirates and all sorts of characters join together in this magical world for children. An event for the whole family.

Battle of Carnival Bands
The international carnival celebration of the carnival in Aalborg, is kicked off on Friday, May 28th with the event 'Battle of Carnival Bands'. Here 15 Danish and international carnival groups compete in the street parade and on stage in a friendly, but earnest attempt, to become the Carnival Band of the Year.

The Grand Parade
Saturday, May 29th the streets of Aalborg become the place to be: the party is for everyone and both the Grand Parade and the following Garden Party in the city park, Kildeparken, offer a wide variety of entertainment and music from all over the world. In Kildeparken different artists will be featured on the four stages placed around the park from midday till midnight.

Throughout the major cities of the world, carnivals take all sorts of different and interesting shapes, but common to them all are the elements of fantasy, extravagance, color and life.

In Aalborg, this common touch also carries great weight, but still with the personal touches of magic, fantasy and color that characterizes the carnival. There is something for everyone during the week of the Carnival in Aalborg and everyone is welcome!
