Are you up to an amazing experience? Do you want to
celebrate life? Do you want to do something fun and memorable?
Then carnival might be something for you. Carnival is time to forget your
inhibitions, wear a wild costume, play a character, and live out your
fantasies. The atmosphere is unique and moving – filled with vibrating
energy, fantasy and joy of life. Tropical dance rhythms, masks and feathers
characterise the colourful carnival parade and create a magical mood. Your
blood pulse intensifies and your body shakes and quivers in a sexy, playful
dance. It is an all-consuming party of fun, fantasy and outrageous costumes
- A vivid celebration of life in a tropical samba fever. You don’t have to
travel far to experience a hot and vibrating carnival, because you can find
all that and much more in Carnival in Aalborg.
You’re the entertainer, the street is your stage
The Carnival in Aalborg is the largest carnival in Northern Europe with
about 25.000 people participating in the Grand Parade every year and more
than 70.000 spectators taking their places along the route gazing at the
magnificent wave of colours, fantasy and people for one weekend in May.
People come together to welcome the spring in a grand celebration filled
with life and festivities. Every year the participants create their costumes
according to a different theme. The theme in 2007 is “Masquerade”, which
captures the very essence of the carnival – passion and creativity, and also
adds a bit of magic and mystique to the festivities.
What distinguishes the Carnival in Aalborg from most other carnivals is that
you do not have to be an authorised carnivalist, be a part of a professional
carnival group or wear an expensive costume to participate in the carnival.
Everyone is invited in the festivities, setting their mark on the carnival.
In other words, during Carnival in Aalborg, the city transforms into a
gigantic theatre - a theatre with you and other people as the entertainers,
the street as the stage and the body as a dancing sculpture. You do not have
to sign up anywhere. You can just join the parade at one of the four
starting-points in the city.
Festive Carnival Party
The Grand Parade takes place on Saturday as dancing Danes move through the
streets of Aalborg, along with hip-wriggling Brazilian dance girls,
impressively tall and colourful Caribbean mass bands and Southern European
mask groups. People from all over the world are united in the Grand Parade,
which is followed by a massive carnival party in the city park, Kildeparken,
with wide variety of entertainment and music from four different stages
until midnight.
The night before the Grand Carnival Party, an international carnival
celebration called “Battle of Carnival Bands” takes place in Kildeparken -
an exciting and colourful evening! Every year lots of interesting carnival
groups from all over the world travel to Aalborg to participate in this
extraordinary event, leaving a memorable mark on the Carnival in Aalborg as
they compete for the title Best Carnival Group.
The children also have their own carnival in Aalborg and several thousands
of children of all ages dress up and march through the streets of Aalborg.
During this special day the city park, Kildeparken is transformed into a
magic world filled with experiences and thrills for everyone; the atmosphere
is filled with joy, imagination and excitement.
