Battle of Carnival Bands

Would you like to join the competition, and be a part of the largest carnival in Northern Europe? And maybe win the title 'Best Carnival Group of The Year'?

The Battle of Carnival Bands is a competition between international and organized carnival groups. Up to 20 invited groups compete for the much coveted title "Best Carnival Group of the Year".

General information
The Battle of Carnival Bands takes place on Friday, May 27th and consists of two parts: a parade, going through the centre of Aalborg, followed by a stage show in the city park, Kildeparken, where each carnival group perform a show. The carnival groups are judged both during the parade and the show. The top 5 groups proceed to the Grand Finale which takes place in Kildeparken on Saturday, May 28th - after the Grand Parade.
Please note,
each group may contain up to 50 persons. Moreover, all participating groups in the Battle of Carnival Bands also participate in the Grand Parade on Saturday.

Route information

The parade route is approximately 2 kilometers and takes about 1 hour to walk. Please check the Carnival Maps on the left side menu to get an overview of the parade route. NOTICE: All of the organized groups start at the same point at Østerågade in midtown.

Stage information

The main stage in Kildeparken is 10 meters wide and approximately 8 meters deep with a side stage for entering and a front stage that is 10 meters wide and 4 meters deep.  We have made sure that 'the room has a high ceiling' for the big spectacular costumes and have laid the grounds for you and your group to give a great performance with large scale costumes and throbbing rhythms.

The judgment
The judgment is carried out by two independent juries - a parade jury with four judges and a show jury with four judges. The juries rank the groups with 0-11 points for each criterion. Consequently, a group can receive a maximum of 33 points from one jury. At most, a group can reach a total of 99 points.

Criteria of judgment
1. Performance - show & expression
   - Trenchancy towards the audience – does the group capture the audience’s attention?
   - Overall impression of dance, movement, choreography and music.

2. Costumes
   - Overall impression of the costumes with emphasis on aesthetics, idea and performance.

3. Story & Theme
   - Judgment of the story and the theme. The story can be a unique idea or a theme stemming from ancient carnival traditions.
   - Importance will be attached to the way the theme of the story is performed.

The 1st place in the contest is awarded 10,000 DKK and a wooden carnival mask made by the Danish designer Kirsten Gitz-Johansen. The winner of the 2nd place receives 7,500 DKK, and the winner of the 3rd place receives 5,000 DKK.
